Testaccio

Just below the genteel residential slopes of the Aventine Hill lies the bustling neighbourhood of Testaccio, traditionally working-class and now on the rise. The Mattatoio was a slaughterhouse until 1975. These days, part of the complex hosts a (somewhat distant) wing of the MACRO contemporary art museum; technically called MACRO Testaccio, but commonly referred to as MACRO Mattatoio (www.museomacro.org; open during exhibitions only, Tue–Sun 2–8pm). Prestigious international exhibitions – including some massive installations – take advantage of this unusual exhibition space. There’s a busy nightlife scene in Testaccio, with some of the most authentic trattorie in Rome and a growing array of chic wine bars and delis.
